Cleaner Adyar river draws elite home buyers
Localities with greenery and water bodies have always attracted the humans because of liveability factor and the Adyar River case is almost similar. However, the challenge is to keep the river pollution free.
Adyar River is an estuary flowing into Bay of Bengal from Chennai city. The localities along the river have always remained a hub of the elite because of the immense greenery and pleasant environment. However, the last year launched drive to clean the Adyar river has began showing results, the citizens demand more.
Localities, such as Boat Club, Adyar, Kotturpuram, Gandhi Nagar are closest to the bank of river and commands most premium residences. These localities primarily possesses tall towers of multi-storey flats and apartments that offer the river view from balcony.
“Green landscape is very rare in Chennai. Those who have bank to spend find localities around river the most attractive to settle down. The pristine surroundings, wide green roads, beautiful view is the main attraction of the area,” says Srinivas Reddy, a local resident of the locality and a property consultant.
As per Magicbricks’ listings, majority of the properties available here are in the price range of Rs 2 crore and above. These properties are usually bought by rich industrialists, businessman and higher level management staff, the local realtors say.
Although the residents of the localities enjoy greenery, there are certain issues which are needed to be addressed for cleaner and greener living. Like because of the dense greenery, insects and pests infestation is very common on lower floors. “Since cleaning of Adyar River is under process, it is too early to talk about its impact on real estate market. If this drive finishes before rainy season, the property sales might increase,” says Udaya Kumar, consultant, Prop Shop.
“Local governing bodies do take initiatives to address the hygiene issues of the locality but that is not enough. The steps taken should meet the quality standards that we look for while paying so high for the residences,” says Vignesh Vastaran, a local resident of the locality.
On one hand, where the greenery is attracting the elite to come and live in the region, the residents are not satisfied with the corporation’s working model to maintain the charm of water body in the area. With this, it is worth concluding that if we manage natural resources judiciously; it will definitely change the face of the region.
