Tamil Nadu extends deadline till February to register agreements under tenancy act
Chennai
Nearly 40 days after the deadline to register agreements under the Tenancy Act ended, the Tamil Nadu government has given more time for registration. The deadline has been extended till the third week of February 2020.
An ordinance dated October 31, 2019 states that the government, on consideration of the representations, have decided to amend the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017 to extend the time limit to enter into tenancy agreements for a further period of 365 days.
The deadline came to an end on September 19. While this is the second extension to the ambitious Act that mandates registration of all lease and rental agreements, housing and urban development department sources said that hardly 2,500 people have come under ambit of Tenancy Act.
The Tenancy Act has replaced the Tamil Nadu Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960, popularly known as the Rent Control Act. Cases pertaining to disputes between the occupants and landlords can be sorted out only through rent authorities constituted in each district.
